Eligibility Information

Eligibility Overview

  1. Players must be residents of NC or a state that borders NC.

  2. Teams may have a maximum of three (3) cross-boundary (out-of-state) athletes.

  3. All teams must have an AAU club membership (register at aausports.org).

  4. All players and coaches must have individual AAU memberships (register at aausports.org).

  5. Players who live in one state and go to school in another, can choose to designate the school state as their state of residence.

  6. Players can play in two (2) age divisions for which they qualify, but they must play with teams from the same club.

  7. A player becomes “attached” to a club when he plays in a licensed AAU event for a team in that club.

  8. After a player becomes attached, he cannot switch clubs until; a) he sits out 60 days or b) if his team has not qualified for nationals, and the state championships have occurred, he can be “picked up” by a team that has qualified for nationals after all the district tournaments have been completed.

  9. Players must be male.

  10. Cannot participate after the summer following high school graduation.

  11. All Non-athletes/coaches are responsible to see that their team meets all eligibility requirements.  Proof of age must be available for review, by an AAU designee at all AAU sanctioned competitions, if requested.  If said information is not available the team is subject to removal from the competitions.

  12. Competition shall be conducted in the following divisions:

Age based divisions shall be used in boys' basketball for the following: 8U, 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U, 13U, 14U.   Age/Grade based divisions shall be used in boys' basketball for the following: 15U/9th grade, 16U/10th grade, 17U/11th grade, 19U/12th grade.

8 & Under:  An athlete can be no older than 8 on August 31, 2018

9 & Under:  An athlete can be no older than 9 on August 31, 2018

10 & Under: An athlete can be no older than 10 on August 31, 2018

11 & Under:  An athlete can be no older than 11 on August 31, 2018

12 & Under:  An athlete can be no older than 12 on August 31, 2018

13 & Under:  An athlete can be no older than 13 on August 31, 2018

14 & Under:  An athlete can be no older than 14 on august 31, 2018

15U/9th Grade:  An athlete can be no older than 15 on August 31, 2018.  Grade Exception: An athlete who is in the 9th grade as of October 1, 2017 and who is no older than 16 on August 31, 2018 is eligible to play in the 15U/9th grade division 

16U/10th Grade:  An athlete can be no older than 16 on August 31, 2018.  Grade Exception: An athlete who is in the 10th grade as of October 1, 2017 and who is no older than 17 on August 31, 2018 is eligible to play in the 16U/10th grade division

17U/11th Grade:  An athlete can be no older than 17 on August 31, 2018.  Grade Exception: An athlete who is in the 11th grade as of October 1, 2017 and who is no older than 18 on August, 31 2018 is eligible to play in the 17U/11th grade division

19U/12th Grade:  An athlete can be no older than 19 on August 21, 2018.  Grade Exception: An athlete who is in the 12th grade as of October 1, 2017 and who is no older than 20 on August 31, 2018 is eligible to play in the 19U/12th grade division 

Grade based divisions shall be used in boys' basketball for the following: 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade  For teams that have chosen to organize on the basis of the athletes grade, and who have players who do not meet the age eligibility criteria for age based teams, the AAU provides grade based competition as follows:

4th Grade:  An athlete must be in the 4th grade or below as of October 1, 2017 and can be no older than 11 on or before August 31, 2018   

5th Grade:  An athlete must be in the 5th grade or below as of October 1, 2017 and can be no older than 12 on or before August 31, 2018 

6th Grade:  An athlete must be in the 6th grade or below as of October 1, 2017 and can be no older than 13 on or before August 31, 2018 

7th Grade:  An athlete must be in the 7th grade or below as of October 1, 2017 and can be no older than 14 on or before August 31, 2018 

8th Grade:  An athlete must be in the 8th grade or below as of October 1, 2017 and can be no older than 15 on or before August 31, 2018
