David was an outstanding player on AAU basketball teams during his high school days. He played with both the Garner Road Bulldogs and the Durham Eagles.

He attended Xavier University where he became the first Musketeer to win AP Player of the Year; and was also the league defensive player of the year. As a senior, he was national player of the year, and first team all American. Sports Illustrated named West to the All Decade college team in 2007. He scored over 2,000 points and collected over 1,000 rebounds.

David was a first round draft choice by the NBA New Orleans Hornets. He also played for the Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and the Golden State Warriors.

He won his first world championship with the Warriors in 2017. David was a two-time all Star and scored a career high 21 points per game in 2009 as a Hornet. He played in over 1,000 NBA games.

David has also been an AAU Volunteer. During the off-season summer months, he coaches for the Garner Road Bulldogs. He and his brother Dwayne operate the C.S. Lewis Center in Raleigh, which has hosted many AAU Events in the last decade.
