Nelson is one of three N.C. citizens to be inducted into The National AAU Hall of Fame (Rod Seaford, Jean Christy). He served many years as organizer and administrator for local youth recreational organizations before joining the AAU in the early 80’s. He founded the NC Baseball program and served as Director for over ten years. He built the Baseball Program until it was the largest sport in NC for several years.

Nelson was a member of the AAU National Board of Directors as the Zone B representative. He also served on the National Baseball Executive Committee, the AAU legislation Committee, The Governor’s Council, and the AAU congress from 1987-2014.

Nelson coached boys’ and girls’ basketball as well as baseball and was the first NC Volleyball chair. He was the NC Governor from 2002-2010, and also served the district as registration chair and treasurer.

Nelson founded the NC SummerSports Games, a multi-sport competition that enjoyed success for several years. He received the President’s Leadership Award, and the NC Volunteer of the Year Award. He also was active in many community organizations and is a member of the Colgate-Palmolive Hall of Fame. He and wife Joyce live in Harrisburg.
